There are two types of membership:
The main membership is composed of zoological collections that are licensed under zoo licensing legislation. Members pay an annual fee which is calculated from their number of paying visitors per annum. These members fall into two categories; Full and Provisional, the latter being those organizations that have not yet satisfied the criteria of Full Membership, but are working towards it.
BIAZA has over 100 members who must do more than comply with zoo legislation in Britain and Ireland. Member collections must undertake significant work in the field of animal welfare, conservation, education and research. Members must follow and comply with the Memorandum and Articles of Association and Codes of Practice of the Association. All members must adhere to the Animal Transaction Policy, which ensures that all animal movements conform to the highest ethical and welfare standards.
BIAZA members complete an annual questionnaire, which allows the Association to collect data and compile a profile of its membership and the work that they carry out.
There are five classes of Associate Member:
Basic Associate - those having an interest in zoos, aquariums and their work.
Professional Associate - those with professional links to zoos, aquariums and their work
Accredited Associate - those having their own animal collections
Corporate Associate - trade Membership
Educational Institution Associate - for departments of educational institutions not keeping animal collections
Biaza’s Membership and Licensing Committee meets 3 times a year: March, July and November.
