Phase 4: Buy an Acre Mexico 2014
In spring 2014 WLT and BIAZA launched Phase 4 of our partnership: BIAZA ‘Buy an Acre’.
Throughout 2014 we concentrated our fundraising efforts on protecting land in Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve in Central Mexico. We worked in partnership with WLT and Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda (GESG), WLT’s conservation partner in Mexico, to help fund an extension to Las Arenitas reserve in the remote north of the Reserve.
We have previously supported GESG through the BIAZA Keepers of the Wild programme, but in 2014 the focus was land purchase. We began this project aiming to raise £10,000 by the end of the year, which would fund the purchase of 100 acres in urgent need of protection.
However, we are proud to say that this £10,000 target was achieved by July! We therefore pledged to attempt to double this, and raise £20,000 by the end of 2014, protecting a total of 200 acres of this precious habitat. But once again, BIAZA members rose to the challenge, and at the end of 2014 we had raised over £23,000, securing 230 acres of this wonderful reserve for wildlife.
Sierra Gorda is an area of wonderful ecological diversity with an extraordinary range of vegetation including evergreen and deciduous tropical forest, shrubs and cacti, oak forests, pine forests and cloud forests. The reserve provides a home to over three hundred bird species and over one hundred mammal species including jaguars, black bears and Neotropical otters.

2014 was a fantastic year with BIAZA members pulling together and achieving a really significant conservation goal.
