As a conservation charity, committed to sustainable practices, Chester Zoo strives to be a leader of environmental sustainability.
To reduce the burning of fossil fuels, carbon monoxide emissions and costs, Chester Zoo developed and implemented a highly effective Energy Conservation and Efficiency Plan. A holistic approach to energy management focused on the major influencing aspects on Site; Buildings Fabric, Equipment and Human Factors. The project has become known as the Energy Smart People, Places and Products Plan. A design code for Inherently Sustainable Structures, focussing on Building Fabric has been developed, reducing energy demand from design concept.
A Demand Matching Strategy for Equipment has been adopted, covering a range of technology from the innovative use of air quality monitors and intelligent controls for heating and ventilation systems, resulting in savings in excess of eighty per cent, down to simple but more efficient system controls and low energy lighting. Solar electric, solar thermal and heat pump installations have also been delivered.
After recognising that Human Factors are of equal importance, a hearts and minds campaign, raising awareness of the issues and promoting positive change was widely embraced across the Zoo. By identifying waste, establishing formal operational parameters and introducing change control, significant gains in energy efficiency and energy conservation has been achieved site wide, at little or no cost.
The most significant saving was achieved at the Elephant and Penguin exhibits, with work achieving acclaim from the National Energy Institute and the Energy Technologies Association. The work was also used as case studies by two leading European energy product manufacturers.
