Green Travel Plan
Sustainable Travel Options offering financial, social and health benefits
In January 2010 a working group was established to deliver a green travel plan to zoo staff and visitors. As well as developing more sustainable travel options the scheme initiatives offer financial, social and health benefits. Through the networks that have developed, we have established new links with local community groups and national organisations; we have also poached some excellent ideas and shared our own.
Current initiatives include a travel reward scheme for staff, 15% discount for visitors coming by bike and a bus service from our local station to the zoo which enables visitors to buy one discounted admission/travel ticket from their point of origin to our site.
Our case studies demonstrate that we are influencing staff behaviour; and latest calculations indicate that we have impacted on the overall carbon footprint relating to visitor travel.
We have a car-share scheme, offer regular free bike repairs (for staff and family members’ bicycles) and have run competitions associated with National Walking Month, Climate Week and Bike Week to encourage participation. We have partnered in two workplace cycling challenges and we promote local low-traffic routes and discounted bus and train season tickets via our intranet and website. We have also supported the Council, as partners and stakeholders, in developing their borough-wide cycling strategy and in a recent, successful, Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF) bid to fund sustainable transport projects and a ‘Connect to Jobs’ initiative to encourage more people to get to work by walking, cycling or using public transport in West Cheshire.
