MSC/PfDip Zoo Conservation Biology
MSC/PfDip Zoo Conservation Biology from SWEP Paignton Zoo Environmental Park
Paignton Zoo Environmental Park was founded primarily as a place of education and has always strived to provide high quality formal programmes to groups of all ages and abilities.
In recent years the Zoo has had an increasing commitment to further and higher education and in 2002 decided to enhance this even further with provision to postgraduate level.
Our aim was to create an applied one year taught postgraduate course, suitable for new graduates and experienced zoo staff, covering all aspects of the management of zoos and related conservation organisations.
Working closely with colleagues from the University of Plymouth we created the MSc/PgDip in Zoo Conservation Biology which aims to give students a thorough understanding of the scientific principles of animal behaviour, genetics, welfare, nutrition, health and research methods and how to apply them to wildlife conservation. It also covers basic principles of business management. It therefore provides a sound basis for career development in this sector.
The course has been running for two years, 14 students successfully completed the MSc in the first year and 11 students are currently completing the final stages of the course and will graduate this autumn. A further 25 students have been offered places on the programme for its third year.
To date all students have been new graduates but the third intake will include some existing zoo staff.
