Zoos.ie and Tayto Park are pleased to invite all licensed Irish Zoos and Aquariums to join us for a Welfare Assessment Workshop.

Our workshop will provide attendees with the necessary welfare theory along with the practical application of welfare assessment, providing skills-training that will enable practitioners to develop a bespoke welfare management protocol at a scale and level of intensity to suit their zoological collection.

The workshop will feature:

  • Welfare theory – defining and developing an understanding that animal welfare is not just good care
  • Animal welfare and the Irish Standards of Modern Zoo Practice
  • Why should you do assessments?
  • What types of assessments can zoos carry out?
  • What parameters can be assessed? Physical, behavioural, environmental, etc.
  • General points of reference – needs, choices and coping
  • We will discuss things to consider when putting together or choosing an assessment template.
  • The afternoon session will be a hands-on practical training session
    • We will use video and in-zoo exercises providing step by step guide to welfare assessment
