Partnership with the IUCN increases scientific and conservation output, connects organisations to a broader conservation network and provides staff with novel opportunities for career development. The IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC) has, for a long time, been working closely with Zoo and Aquarium institutions across the globe in species conservation efforts. More recent impetus around working together towards Red List assessment of species has proven both popular and effective.
This workshop has been produced by the IUCN SSC, BIAZA and The Deep to offer training on the IUCN Red List, its methodology and the assessment process. The workshop will act as a first step in developing Red List assessment collaborations between BIAZA institutions and the IUCN SSC.
The aim of the workshop is to provide participants with training in the Red List process, the application of categories and criteria as well as the data that is used to support assessments. The training will be delivered by Rob Bullock, the IUCN Red List Officer at The Deep, and is designed to be interactive, using a mixture of presentations, exercises, plenary discussions, and practical working group sessions.
Upon completion of the training workshop, delegates will work with their host organisations and the IUCN SSC Director of Strategic Partnerships to establish mutually beneficial partnerships with IUCN SSC Species Specialist Groups, working towards Red List targets for the Barometer of Life.
The workshop will be held at The Deep aquarium in Hull on the 11th and 12th of September and will be a full two day course (09:00-17:00). There will be a capped number of delegates and places will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. A small delegate fee will cover lunches and drinks for both days (£40 per person).
