To date, Fota Wildlife Park has raised over €27,000 for wild tiger conservation, which has earned the Park a Gold Award from 21st Century Tiger. 21st Century Tiger is a unique wild tiger conservation initiative between Dreamworld Wildlife Foundation and the Zoological Society of London.
Fota Wildlife Park is home to three Sumatran Tigers, the most endangered for all the subspecies of tigers, whose rapid population decline has been driven by poaching and by clearances of habitat for agriculture.
The Sumatran tiger is native to the Indonesian island of Sumatra. It was classified as critically endangered by IUCN in 2008 as the population was estimated at 441 to 679 individuals. Fota Wildlife Park is sponsoring the 21st Century Tiger poaching prevention programme in Sumatra as part of their ongoing contribution to wild tiger conservation.
