Community Art at the Heart of Brent Lodge: Developing a zoo based art collective
This project aimed to incorporate the local community into developing a unique interpretation provision at Brent Lodge Park.
Successive zoo licensing reports have identified the interpretation provision at Brent Lodge as being substandard. So we conceived this project to incorporate the local community into developing a unique interpretation provision at Brent Lodge Park. The project was devised to highlight the skill sets of excluded community groups in an area where their work would be accessible by a large number of people.
The art collective was established to provide a space where groups could express themselves artistically and display their work. All the signage produced is a collaborative effort with artists working together to produce a background and individual images being added to the background. The text is provided by the animal staff at the centre.
The art collective was devised to provide an area where artists with and without learning disabilities could work alongside one another as well as an area where different community groups such as Mencap and the Youth Offending service could work in conjunction with each other to produce signage for the zoo. The art collective establishment and output was also crucial in re-branding the animal centre as a community zoo and placing it at the heart of the local community.
