Komodo: island of the dragons
Komodo: island of the dragons from ZSL - London Zoo
Komodo dragons are a particularly charismatic species with ongoing conservation needs, and one the ZSL wished to present in the collection at London and make a positive contribution to the coordinated breeding programme
It was recognised that only an entirely new enclosure would meet the standards of care that Komodo dragons require.
Komodo: island of the dragons provides a world class facility for the captive management of these animals in a temperate climate and an exciting and educational experience for visitors. With an innovative blend of design, building technology , interpretation planting and animal training, it allows intimae views of the animals and contributes to their conservation through captive management, research, fundraising and public awareness.
The climate is maintained by state of the art computer controlled heating, cooling and rainfall system. There is also an external sunning area.
A research project showed that the thermoregulatory abilities of the dragons in London was the same as in the wild. ZSL supports in situ conservation in Gili Motang Island and in Flores.
