Phobias from ZSL - London Zoo
Phobias – the development of a syllabus linked post-16 session in order to capture a new market area
This project details the development, delivery and evaluation of a Post-16 education session at ZSL London Zoo.
With the help of a further education college and a clinical hypnotherapist, John Clifford, we developed an interactive ‘Phobias’ session.
The session includes a lecture based introduction with Q&A, followed by an experience of three forms of phobia treatment – cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), hypnosis and graduated exposure to an animal. The evaluation was conducted as a pre-visit evaluation of expectations and a post visit feedback evaluation.
Analysis shows that students have a wide range of expectations from content to delivery. Their existing knowledge is limited and their emotional perception of the session wide ranging.
Teacher feedback was extremely positive with 100% rating the session as excellent or good. All teachers gave a strong positive response to attending again and would recommend the session to others.
Student feedback was limited to one college and although, on the whole, the response was positive, they would like more interaction and free time in the Zoo.
We plan to review the session in the summer term of 2008, and using the feedback, improve it for autumn 2008.
