AMPHIPOD [Amphibian Breeding Unit]
We designed a high-level quarantine breeding facility capable of providing wide-ranging environmental parameters - temperature, humidity (through a variable misting system) and photoperiod - for two different species of amphibian. There are two separate animal rooms with a keeper’s area in between them. Either of the two animal rooms can be maintained at any temperature between 6C and 30C and with separate night temperature control.
Separating the two rooms is a staff changing area with lockers for keeping separate uniform required for each room, foot-dips prior to entry to each room and an invertebrate rearing area [for feeder inverts].
We achieve full disinfection of all waste water and clinical disposal of all other waste materials from the facility.
Waste water is collected in a holding tank at the front of the facility and is then pumped to a second treatment tank where a disinfectant is added. After a suitable disinfection time, the water is released to the main drain. Daily records of temperature, feeding and breeding can be recorded directly onto the Zoo’s main server by means of a net-book with a wireless connection in each amphibian room.
In the first year of operation, we housed 10 glass vivaria in each of the two amphibian rooms. Each vivaria has a misting nozzle and drain for minimal maintenance. Supply water is filtered and UV treated prior to being piped into each room.
In the first room, we housed six groups of between five and eight golden mantellas in each group. In the second room, we housed nine groups of between 10 to 12 lemur leaf frogs in each group. Both species bred successfully in their first year in the facility with around 50 lemur leaf frogs and around 500 golden mantellas being produced.
