Family Fun day – Sunday 1 April 2007
An amazing successful day for Shaldon, how did they fit them all in!
We have held biannual Fun Days at the Trust for many years. They are held early Spring and Autumn to attract visitors outside the main tourist season. Entrance on these days is just £1 per person.
In addition to being able to view our animal collection, the South West Herpetological Society bring along various reptiles for visitors to handle.
Other attractions include facepainting, juggling, cake and plant stall and various games. With only 2 staff this event is heavily dependent on the help of our team of volunteers to man the various stalls and attractions. These events have previously relied on publicity through press releases to local papers and posters displayed in local towns.
On this occasion, to attempt to attract interest from a wider area we also targeted local holiday camps, used local and regional media and on 2 prominent sites displayed donated banners. The cost of this event was less than £100 in total. Fun Day attendance had previously averaged 700 visitors, raising on average £1,300. However, the additional effort for this event resulted in a record attendance of 1500 visitors raising £2,500.
This number is remarkable given our visitor numbers average 15,000 annually. As a small collection with no dedicated marketing or fundraising team we feel this achievement is exceptional.
The efforts of our staff and volunteers have succeeded not only in almost doubling what has been raised from one-off events in the past but has also considerably raised our profile within the local area.
