Going for Gold
Joint Sustainability Award from Green Tourism for South West Environmental Parks Ltd Paignton, Newquay and Living Coasts
Using the Knowledge Transfer Partnership with Plymouth University an environmental graduate was employed to implement ISO 14001 which took two years for Paignton and a further 12 months for Newquay and Living Coast.
In 2006, all three sites were officially certified with ISO 14001. To ensure continuous improvement, an environmental officer is employed at each of the sites. In order to progress following the ISO 14001 accreditation the organization decided to look at the sustainability of the business within the tourism industry. Green tourism is sustainable tourism, which takes into account the needs of the environment, local residents, businesses, and visitors.
In 2007, applications were submitted for the Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS) Award. All three sites were assessed by a qualified grading advisor against a rigorous set of criteria, covering a range of areas, like energy and water efficiency, waste management, biodiversity and more. In December 2007 all three sites were awarded Gold for the GTBS, the highest accreditation of this scheme.
