Support the Snake
Suport the snake from Banham Zoo
A innovative scheme to encourage the recycling of plastic
The ‘Support the Snake & Save the World’ campaign was devised by the Education Team at Banham Zoo to create an awareness of the need for recycling, to demonstrate the waste produced by humans and the impact this has on the environment and to give general visitors to the zoo practical recycling advice though fun activities.
To attain these objectives we joined forces with the local radio station and local and regional newspapers to encourage the public to get involved to build a snake model out of used yoghurt pots to demonstrate how much waste we create!
The culmination of this media activity was the ‘Support the Snake and Save the World’ event which ran over 2 days and everyone was encouraged to come along, donate more yoghurt pots and join in the fun activities. Local county councils and several organisations took part to run activities and raise awareness of environmental issues. The 100m long and growing snake model was displayed in the zoo and children could decorate a yoghurt pot and add to the length!
The local radio and newspapers attended the weekend and visitor attendance to the event was good.
Evaluation was carried out through questionnaires on staff, visitor and participating organisations to evaluate the preparation and presentation of the campaign, support and organisation for external parties and to gain understanding of visitor enjoyment, education and how we could improve on the event.
The event was very successful and the feedback indicated this.
