Summer Education Campaign
As part of Bristol Zoo’s Wow! Gorillas project and 175th anniversary celebrations, the Education Team ran a wide-reaching public education campaign about gorillas. The summer campaign had clear aims which linked to the wider Wow! Gorillas objectives. Our campaign also coincided with and supported the EAZA ape campaign.
The campaign was delivered on site at Bristol Zoo over the summer holidays and at the UK’s largest nature festival, the Bristol Festival of Nature (BFoN), a free event for the public which was attended by over 20,000 people.
A variety of family friendly games and activities were developed. The activities where designed to meet the needs of different learning styles and to appeal to different age groups, thus making the campaign appealing and accessible to the whole family. We included activities and displays to reach early years aged children, and to encourage visitors to perform positive behaviours to benefit gorillas. The aims were thoroughly evaluated using a selection of methods, and the results show success in achieving the aims.
Overall, ‘Wow! Gorillas’ was a highly successful education campaign that was appealing and accessible to all Zoo visitors and the public, and together with the other elements of the Wow! Gorillas project, provided a memorable learning experience.
