Here be Dragons
Here Be Dragons from ZSL - London Zoo
Innovative interpretation for London Zoo's Komodo Dragon experience!
The interpretation was an integral part of thee whole exhibit design of the Komodo dragon exhibit at London Zoo, combining housing for the lizards, landscaping, visitor spaces and a wide variety of interpretive elements.
The only access to the new exhibit is down a long narrow path between two old buildings. However, one of the most innovative features of the interpretation was to turn this unattractive gloomy corridor to advantage by creating a sense of mounting suspense and anticipation as visitors approached the dragon’s lair.
A graphic panel describing ZSL’s field research on Flores is presented and an interactive money box for raising funds for dragon conservation. There is a computer game of multiple choice – to help a baby dragon up a tree, and graphic panels on the prey and feeding habits of dragons, including a life-size model of half-eaten Timor deer inside the exhibit.
Evaluation included a questionnaire, those who had been and those who had not, and an evaluation report tracking visitors. Full evaluation is provided showing considerable success e.g. higher awareness of where dragons come from and where the young live.
