Glow worms: they're beetles as bright as LEDs, and more widespread than you might think!

BIAZA Glow Worm Patrol is a campaign to get zoos and aquariums searching for populations of these enigmatic insects.

We're working with the UK Glow Worm Survey, which has been running since 1990, and gathers data about a fascinating insect that most people don’t even realise exists in Britain.

We have new resources below by the BIAZA Native Invertebrate Focus Group to help organisations run surveys in summer 2026.

To support this year's BIAZA campaign, Robin Scagell describes why we need to search for glow worms, how to go about locating glow-worm sites in your area and how to survey the sites. The secret life of the glow worm, what to look for and how to record them. Robin has been heading the UK Glow Worm Survey since 1990.
