From Dr Paul Rose, this talk is entitled "Why everyone loves a zoo nerd - Science supporting animal care". This 30-45 minute talk will begin at 12pm, with time for questions at the end.
Using data to inform practical application is termed an evidence-based approach. It is essential that all aspects of zoo animal husbandry and population management are supported by evidence. Evidence is collected from research on the animals in the zoo themselves, as well as from free-living individuals, museum specimens, zoo records, information gained from interviews with zoo staff and other sources that provide invaluable data on what animals need, on how practice may need developing and on the best ways of filling gaps in our knowledge. This talk will provide a brief overview of how zoo research is integral to the functioning of the modern zoo, adding value to the animals that are exhibited, further supporting the educational and conservation outcomes of such populations. Bridging the gap between the scientist and the zookeepers will also be discussed to show how evaluation of animal care, using the evidence-based approach, is beneficial to all stakeholders (animal, visitor, animal care staff).
Dr Paul Rose is a Research Associate at Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT) and the Vice-Chair of the BIAZA Research Committee.
