Native species

Most people equate zoos and aquariums to holding and protecting animals that are exotic to the UK and Ireland, with the animals they care for acting as ambassadors for their conservation efforts overseas. However, our members are just as passionate about protecting our wildlife at home with many focusing on native species and others actively involved in native species conservation projects.

These projects are often collaborative in nature with our members working alongside wildlife charities and NGOs. Modern zoological establishments provide husbandry expertise, support breeding programmes, raise awareness and help with fundraising efforts to ensure Britain’s wildlife has the best chance of survival in the face of increased pressures from climate change, agriculture and persecution.
