Here at Call of the Wild Zoo we currently have a fantastic opportunity to join our keeper team, working primarily on our mammal section. The ideal candidate for this position is an enthusiastic, highly motivated, and reliable individual, someone who can work effective independently and work well with the other members of the mammal team as well as the wider animal keeping team. 

The successful candidate will be working with a variety of different species, including but not limited to, servals, otters, colobus monkeys, zebra, meerkats, wallabies and some additional taxa of greater flamingos and African Penguins. The successful candidate will also play a vital role in developing the zoo, as we look to build our new Asia section, which plans include our new otter facility and clouded leopards. 

Daily routines and tasks to be undertaken include daily husbandry tasks, enclosure maintenance, gardening, plant watering, educational talks. This is a physically demanding role that involves a lot of heavy lifting, bending and kneeling down, gardening as well as other labour-intensive tasks. 

An ideal candidate would have experience working in a zoo environment previously, have exceptional time keeping skills and able to priorities their daily routines. An attention for detail is crucial for this role as there is a lot of observations and record keeping that needs to be undertaken. The ability to do public educational talks and confidently speaking to the public answering questions is also vital.

This position is full time, 5 days a week working 40 hours over the course of the week. The candidate will expect to work on a flexible rota including bank holidays and weekends. Starting salary for this role is dependent on experience at which level you will be employed, for example trainee, experienced or senior keeper. The successful candidate will be entitled to 28 days of annual leave over the year from January to December and holiday is to be taken out of school holidays, but there are exemptions under managements discretion. 

Credentials

·       Minimum of 2-3 years’ experience in the zoo industry working with similar or mixed taxa. 

·       Ideally will have an animal qualification of L3 and above, or additional experience in the role. 

·       Excellent knowledge and experience with LSS. 

·       Someone that is physically fit and can keep up with a fast-paced environment. 

·       Knowledge of recording keeping using ZIMS is desirable but not essential and can be taught in house. 

·       MUST be confident around mammals and previous experience with Category 1 animals is desirable. 

·       Firearms is desirable but not essential.

·       First aid trained is desirable but not essential.
