The National Zoological Society of Wales is a registered charity (no. 514108) that owns and runs the Welsh Mountain Zoo – National Zoo of Wales in Colwyn Bay, UK. The Zoo embraces modern conservation thinking and strives for high standards in all departments. It is a member of BIAZA, EAZA, WAZA and Species360.

The Welsh Mountain Zoo – National Zoo of Wales is looking for a Seasonal Education Officer, who will answer to the Education Manager and Director of Living Collections.  The successful candidate will support the Education Manager in delivery of all education during the peak season.   

Main responsibilities include:

  • To support with the production and delivery of a wide range of formal education sessions in line with the EYDAF, based around the National Curriculum and NZSW’s conservation message. All sessions will include solo delivery, for early years foundation stages to higher education level.
  • Assist with general education administration and support with the maintenance of all educational resources to ensure they are fit for purpose.
  • Working with the Education Manager to support the delivery of various informal education including public engagement, fund-raising and zoo clubs.
  • Ensuring that the classroom and facilities in the WILD Centre are kept clean and tidy at all times.
  • Ensure that all school visits run as smoothly as possible and handled in a professional way, incorporating adaptive teaching styles onsite, virtually or during outreach sessions.
  • Work collaboratively with other departments to ensure the smooth running of the Zoo.

 

Skills and attributes

  • Must be educated to Level 3 and above and hold a qualification in an Animal or environmental field.
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Previous experience with public speaking, delivering presentations, working with organised groups and/or the general public.  
  • Experience with SEND/SEMH audiences is desirable.
  • A drive and passion for education and conservation.
  • Enthusiastic and self-motivated and be able to work as part of a team
  • Must be flexible and be able to work weekends and bank holidays.
  • Ability to prioritise with excellent organisational skills
  • Able to demonstrate a consistent, collaborative and respectful approach when building relationships with management and colleagues alike. 
  • Microsoft Word and Excel experience essential
  • A full driving licence essential

This is a full-time position working 35 hours per week from April/May to September.
