We have a unique opportunity for a full-time dive instructor to join our 5-star PADI Diving Centre at the Blue Planet Aquarium. You will have the chance to experience a huge collection of fish, including one of Europe’s largest collection of sharks in a huge 3.8 million litre tank, with one of the longest underwater viewing tunnels in Europe!

Don’t worry if you are not qualified to a Dive Instructor level, you could still apply for our part time diver opportunity via Indeed.

Job Description

You will enhance the visitor experience by raising awareness of animal welfare, zoological strategies, conservation, and education.

You will be enthusiastic in delivering the highest standard of exhibits and dive operation throughout Blue Planet Aquarium ensuring animal welfare is your priority, as you feed the animals and maintain their tank to the highest standards, whilst also taking part in the Aqua Theatre shows exceeding the visitor’s expectations.

Duties/ Responsibilities

Diving

  • Instructing or assisting all diving activities including but not limited to customer dive experiences, dive shows, maintenance dives, media dives and training dives.
  • Ensure accurate completion of all dive-related paperwork.
  • Collaborate with the Dive Officer on dive equipment, maintenance, training, and daily dive show operations.
  • Clean and maintain scuba equipment, carry out regular inspections.
  • Satisfactorily complete dive courses agreed upon with the Dive Officer.
  • Carry out dive compliance visits across UK sites and ensure suitable risk assessments and dive project plans are prepared and updated.

Animal Husbandry

  • Responsible where directed for the care and development of Livestock in the aquariums care.
  • Preparation and enrichment of the animal’s food.
  • Consideration for the welfare of all animals in our care providing input to ethical review committee where requested.

Exhibit Maintenance

  • Maintain clean, tidy and safe standards of quarantine, span deck, diver entry, salt mix area, changing rooms, classrooms.
  • Support the maintenance of the main tanks life support system, including but not limited to sand filters, salt mix.
  • Maintain the shark exhibit vacuum system.
  • Support and assist the maintenance of tank pumps.
  • Assist in keeping records such as feed records and equipment usage on the system.

Dive and Exhibit Health and Safety:

  • Comply with DSL Diving regulations and statutory legislation, such as the Diving at Work Regulations 1997 (DWR) and Approved Code of Practices (ACOPS).
  • Responsible for keeping personal dive records up to date and in accordance with DWR and ACOPS and for ensuring in date medicals for self and other members of the dive team.

Customer Service:

  • Deliver world-class customer service at all times, maintaining a courteous and approachable demeanour when interacting with the public.
  • Enhance the customer experience at Blue Planet Aquarium, providing information about dive programs and experiences.
  • Maintain a high satisfaction rate for diving courses taught and ensure visitor safety during dive experiences.
  • To actively sell BPA Dive Products to general visitors/divers

General Responsibilities:

  • Maintain personal diving records, qualifications, memberships, and medical certifications.
  • Helping to prepare the aquarium for opening when required, and where trained to do so carry out the role of fire marshal.

From time to time the company may make reasonable requests for you to undertake duties not necessarily covered in the above in line with business needs.

Requirements

  • PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (Essential)
  • Hold an up-to-date HSE medical
  • First Aid Trained (Training can be provided)
  • You will have knowledge of diving equipment to ensure correct maintenance is carried out in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • You will have significant experience as a diver both in practice and in theory and be able to demonstrate this through your personal dive logbook.
