The Role
This is an important role working as a core part of our zoo department. You will be assigned sections to work on which will include mixed taxa and a diverse range of species. Zoo Keepers are mentored by our team of Senior Keepers and Section Leaders. We encourage career progression and are committed to continuing professional development in your role.
What We Expect
- Be responsible for maintaining excellent husbandry, health, and welfare of a wide variety of species that have specialised requirements and needs.
- Have self-motivation to work independently, but also embrace working as part of a large team.
- We’d ideally like you to have completed the Diploma in the Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals (or similar) and have at least 2 years practical animal experience.
- Ensuring the safety of our visitors, staff and animals is of key importance, and ensuring that health & safety protocols are followed at all times.
- A proactive individual who will take a hands-on approach within the department with an eye for detail and presentation.
- You must have a positive and approachable attitude, with a good work ethic.
- Committed to working full-time, including weekends and bank holidays with a full driving licence and car.
- You must be able to adapt to a flexible rota.
- You must be physically fit for the demands of this role.
The Job Details
- To be responsible for the general welfare and husbandry of zoo animals including the cleaning and inherent safety of enclosures, the preparation and storage of animal food, and the feeding of animals.
- Assist with the training and handling of animals, assisting veterinary staff with procedures, and administering medication with relevant aftercare.
- Undertaking and recording accurate animal observations.
- Have the ability to deliver memorable and informative guest experiences.
- To keep a varied, detailed, and complete record of all animals in your care within a given remit including daily report sheets, quarantine records, and veterinary records.
- To train and be trained in all aspects of animal husbandry.
- Assisting in general duties and requirements, as directed by Senior Management.

- Permanent contract
- 42.5 hours per week, worked on a rota basis that includes weekends and bank holidays.
