Job Overview:

As the Deputy Head Keeper, you will play a pivotal role in the management and care of the animals & staff within Peak Wildlife Park. Working closely with the Head Keeper, you will assist in overseeing daily operations, ensuring the highest standards of animal welfare, and leading a team of dedicated keepers. This position requires a strong leader with a passion for wildlife conservation, exceptional organisational skills, and extensive experience in animal husbandry as well as a passion & understanding of leading a team.

 

Key Responsibilities:

·       Animal Care: Ensure all animals receive the highest standard of care, including proper nutrition, health monitoring, enrichment, and habitat maintenance.

·       Team Leadership: Support and supervise a team of keepers, providing guidance, training, and mentorship to ensure efficient and effective daily operations.

·       Operational Management: Assist in the planning and implementation of work schedules, maintenance routines, and emergency protocols.

·       Health and Safety: Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, conducting regular risk assessments and implementing necessary measures to maintain a safe environment for staff, visitors, and animals.

·       Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of animal health, behaviour, breeding, and enrichment activities. Assist in preparing reports for management and regulatory bodies.

·       Guest Interaction: Engage with visitors, conducting educational talks, tours, and demonstrations to enhance the visitor experience and promote conservation awareness.

·       Collaboration: Work closely with other departments, including veterinary staff, education teams, and maintenance personnel, to ensure cohesive operations.

·       Conservation Efforts: Participate in and contribute to conservation programs and initiatives both within the park and in collaboration with external organizations.


Qualifications:

Education: Qualification in an animal related field is preferred, or the equivalent experience. As well as a leadership/management qualification or willingness to acquire one. 
Experience: Minimum of 5 years of paid experience in a accredited zoo, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or leadership role.

Skills:

·       Strong leadership and team management abilities.

·       Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

·       In-depth knowledge of animal husbandry practices.

·       Ability to work in a physically demanding environment.

·       Proficiency in record-keeping and basic computer skills.

·       Firearms licensed or willingness to acquire one.
