Hertfordshire Zoo is looking for a skilled and reliable Maintenance Operative/Handyman to help keep our facilities in top condition. From maintaining enclosures to carrying out essential repairs across the site, this is a fantastic opportunity to put your practical skills to use in a one-of-a-kind setting.

About the Role:

As a Maintenance Operative, you will carry out essential repairs and upkeep across our large, diverse site. From fixing enclosures and staff facilities to handling minor plumbing, carpentry, and painting tasks, no two days will be the same. We are looking for someone proactive, practical, and willing to take on a variety of maintenance duties to keep our zoo running smoothly.

Key Responsibilities:

·         Performing general maintenance and repairs, including basic plumbing, carpentry, and painting

·         Assisting with small building and refurbishment projects

·         Maintaining enclosures, pathways, visitor areas, and staff facilities

·         Responding to maintenance requests and carrying out work efficiently

·         Ensuring all tasks are completed in line with Health & Safety regulations

Requirements:

·         Minimum 2 years' experience in maintenance, handyman, or general repair work

·         Basic skills in carpentry, plumbing, painting, and general repairs

·         Ability to work independently and as part of a team

·         Self-motivated with a problem-solving mindset

·         Reliable, hardworking, and able to manage tasks effectively

·         Full UK driving licence and access to own vehicle (Hertfordshire Zoo is not accessible by public transport)

·         Right to Work in the UK (British Citizen, Indefinite Leave to Remain, EEA Citizen with Settled Status, or valid Visa/Work Permit)

What We Offer:

  • Permanent, full-time position (40 hours per week, worked as 8-hour shifts either 07.00-16.00, 08:00-17:00 or 09:00-18:00, 5 over 7 days, including at least one weekend day)
