ROLE: Species Warden (part time)
REPORTING TO: Avicultural Lead (and Managing Director as necessary)
ROLE SUMMARY:
To assist in the management of the Nature Reserve and specifically the avicultural areas and bird collection. The role involves working with captive collections, facilitating ongoing enclosure maintenance and ensuring an excellent visitor and volunteer experience.
HOURS:
24 hrs per week over 3 days (flexibility required) A full clean driving license and car ownership are essential.
Main Responsibilities
Avicultural and species Responsibilities
- Assist with the implementation of the species management in relation to the captive bird collection (e.g., scrub clearance, strimming, mowing, fencing, pond and path maintenance).
- Safely operate and maintain a range of tools and equipment, such as chainsaws, brush cutters, mowers, and motor vehicles
- Undertake species monitoring and ecological surveys as required.
- Implement biosecurity measures to protect captive and wild species.
- Perform spraying tasks (if trained and certified to do so).
- Monitor, record, and report on the health of captive species, wild animals, and livestock.
- Respond to animal emergencies in accordance with approved protocols.
- Support volunteers and conservation groups in planned activities
- Open and close the reserve, ensuring security and perimeter checks.
Avicultural Responsibilities
- Conduct routine husbandry, feeding, and enclosure maintenance for captive species.
- Assist in the captive breeding and rearing of various species, including endangered birds.
- Participate in handling, restraint, and treatment of animals under appropriate supervision.
- Assist in animal transportation, introductions, and medication administration.
- Maintain the highest welfare standards for all captive and released species.
- Ensure cleanliness and proper maintenance of assigned facilities and enclosures.
Visitor Engagement and Education
- Serve as an ambassador for Pensthorpe, delivering exceptional customer care.
- Assist with public talks, presentations, and visitor engagement activities.
- Conduct warden-led walks and interactive experiences.
- Work with the engagement team to develop educational trails and resources.
- Contribute to special events and seasonal visitor experiences.
- Direct visitors to all parts of the attraction, ensuring they have a positive experience.
Park Maintenance and Presentation
- Carry out general site maintenance, including pruning, mowing, fencing, bin emptying, and cleaning.
- Perform repairs to exhibits and work with the maintenance team as needed.
- Maintain high standards of presentation for public areas and enclosures.
- Ensure site safety and address hazards promptly.
Team Responsibilities
- Actively contribute to team meetings, sharing ideas and feedback to improve operations.
- Maintain professionalism, respect, and effective communication with colleagues.
- Collaborate with other departments to support the overall business objectives.
Health & Safety / Environmental Health
- Comply with all health and safety regulations to maintain a safe working environment.
- Follow company procedures as outlined in the Health & Safety Policy.
- Take responsibility for personal well-being and adhere to manual handling limits.
- Report any safety concerns, incidents, or near-misses to management.
General Duties
- Welcome visitor groups and provide guidance when needed.
- Maintain a smart and professional appearance in line with uniform requirements.
- Undertake any other reasonable tasks as requested by management.
- Adhere to company policies and procedures as set out in the Employment Handbook.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including outside of normal working patterns.
