Are you a passionate and experienced zoo professional ready to lead and inspire? The Tropical Butterfly House, a popular and dynamic visitor attraction in Sheffield, is seeking a proactive and knowledgeable Head of Animals to oversee the management and welfare of our diverse animal collection, ranging from exotic mammals and birds to reptiles, invertebrates, and, of course, butterflies.
About the Role
As the Head of Animals, you will be responsible for the strategic leadership, development, and day-to-day operations of the animal department. You will play a key role in ensuring the highest standards of animal welfare, husbandry, and enrichment across the collection, in line with BIAZA guidelines and Zoo Licensing Act requirements.
You will oversee a dedicated team of keepers, lead on animal training and welfare programs, and be instrumental in preparing for and maintaining excellent results during zoo inspections. You will also contribute to the planning and development of enclosures, educational initiatives, and conservation messaging to enhance the visitor experience.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage the animal care team, ensuring exceptional welfare and husbandry standards.
Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation including the Zoo Licensing Act, DEFRA standards, and BIAZA guidelines.
Develop and implement animal training, enrichment, and welfare monitoring programs.
Oversee animal health and veterinary liaison, including medication records and preventative care.
Act as primary liaison during zoo inspections and maintain accurate, up-to-date records.
Drive innovation in enclosure design, husbandry practices, and species acquisition.
Support and deliver engaging, educational content for public talks and experiences.
Work collaboratively with senior leadership on departmental budgets, strategic planning, and development projects.
About You
Minimum of 5 years’ experience working in a zoo or wildlife park, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
Strong working knowledge of BIAZA standards and the Zoo Licensing Act.
Proven experience in preparing for and managing zoo inspections.
Demonstrated expertise in exotic animal care, particularly small mammals, birds, reptiles, and invertebrates.
Skilled in people management with a positive, team-oriented leadership style.
Excellent organizational, communication, and record-keeping skills.
Relevant qualification in animal management, zoology, or related field (e.g. DMZAA, BSc).
Desirable
Experience with public engagement and delivering educational presentations.
Knowledge of conservation practices and sustainability within zoos.
Familiarity with animal training and welfare assessment frameworks.
