Wild Planet Trust is a registered charity founded in 1957, committed to advancing education, science, and wildlife conservation. Based in Devon, UK, the Trust owns and operates two renowned zoos in the South West of England, as well as two local nature reserves and a designated National Nature Reserve. Through a unique blend of visitor support and staff expertise, Wild Planet Trust actively contributes to conservation efforts both in the UK and around the world, championing biodiversity and ecological awareness on a global scale.

Paignton Zoo, originally opened in 1923 as the Torbay Zoological Gardens, has evolved over the past century into one of the South West’s leading conservation organisations and most popular visitor attractions. Today, it is home to more than 230 animal species and proudly holds the title of an award-winning botanical garden, with over 4,000 plant species on record. This rich biodiversity and ongoing commitment to wildlife and habitat preservation make Paignton Zoo a vital hub for education, conservation, and inspiration.

We are thrilled to offer an exciting opportunity for an experienced Bird Keeper to become part of our dedicated Bird team in a full-time, permanent capacity. This position involves working 38.75 hours per week across 5 days on a flexible 7-day rota, which includes weekend and bank holiday coverage. The role comes with a competitive salary ranging from £25,167.35 to £26,698.75, dependent on experience.

In this role, you will be responsible for the daily husbandry of a large and varied bird collection, ensuring their welfare through diligent care and maintaining high standards of biosecurity and exhibit presentation. You’ll conduct meticulous record keeping using ZIMS and consistently monitor the health and behaviour of the birds to support their wellbeing and detect any concerns early.

Candidates should bring a minimum of two years’ experience within a zoological collection or comparable setting, along with a strong foundation in avian husbandry and proven competence in handling and restraining a wide range of bird species. Exceptional observational skills and meticulous attention to detail are essential for monitoring animal health and safeguarding welfare. A solid working knowledge of ZIMS and confidence in maintaining precise records are also required. The ideal applicant will be highly motivated, adaptable to evolving departmental needs, and possess a proactive, positive attitude.

At Paignton Zoo, we believe taking care of our team is just as important as caring for our animals. That’s why we offer a benefits package that’s packed with perks: enjoy 33 days of paid holiday pro-rata (yes, even Bank Holidays!), free branded uniform to keep you looking sharp, and access to top-tier training—from First Aid to driving a tractor. Your family can join the adventure too, with free zoo entry for loved ones, plus sweet discounts on food and retail while you’re on site. We’ll make parking a breeze with free staff spaces and support your wellbeing through our Employee Assistance Programme. Fancy joining the Firearms team? Opportunities await—pending a few conditions, of course.

We proudly champion equality of opportunity for all our team members. We welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds and identities, including but not limited to age, disability, sex, gender reassignment, sexual orientation, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, and marriage or civil partnerships. Inclusion isn't just a policy—it’s part of our culture. Everyone deserves the chance to thrive here.
