As directed by the Group zoo operations manager, the animal team leader is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the animal team, as well as ensuring daily high standards of husbandry and welfare for the animal collection. A hands-on role, the animal team leader will ensure all team members are prepared for the day’s operation and are fully conversant on the standard operating protocols for the section(s) they are assigned.

 

The animal team leader will demonstrate knowledge and common sense relating to the species kept and the husbandry requirements as dictated by the Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare. This role is responsible for ensuring the animal enclosures are serviced and maintained according to the standard operating protocols and the animal diets are prepared and delivered per the approved diet sheets. Additionally will oversee and deliver appropriate enrichment and animal training plans as required for each species.

 

Will support the Zoo duty manager to ensure that that routine prophylactic schedules are maintained such weights, deworming, vaccinations, annual examinations etc.

 

Under the direction of the veterinarian, will ensure that all medical treatments and administration of medications are delivered with accuracy and in accordance with the veterinarian’s instructions.

 

The animal team leader will conduct daily, weekly, monthly, biannual, and annual audits as required by the business, as well as adheres to, and ensures the animal team adheres to H&S procedures, protocols, and policies.

 

The animal team leader will ensure the animal enclosures and adjacent guest viewing areas are clean, well presented, and safe for guests, team members, and the animal collection.

 

Leading by example, the animal team leader will ensure the animal team’s delivery of outstanding guest services and experiences, including daily educational talks, demonstrations, and school workshop programmes. As required, will assist in guest recovery.

As directed by the zoo operations manager, will liaise with the marketing team to develop exciting and engaging animal specific content for special events, social media, and the business website.

 

The animal team leader will receive training and will be expected to perform basic tasks on various operating systems which may include Microsoft Teams, Workforce, Smartlog, Fuse Metrix, and basic ZIMS entries.

Will ensure that daily specimen reports (DSR) are completed daily with accuracy.

This role, under direction of the zoo operations manager will deliver training and assessments to the animal team members such as section training, diet preparation and delivery, enrichment, capture and restraint for veterinary examinations, animal handling for experiences etc.

 

Will recruit, train, and oversee volunteers as well as develop work plans and assessments for work placement applicants.

 

Will work with the Group Zoo Operations Manager and Zoo duty manager to ensure orders are carried out when required to ensure adequate levels of feed, substrates and other relevant supplies are maintained.
