BIAZA Welfare Toolkit

BIAZA’s Animal Welfare Working Group (AWWG), part of the BIAZA Research Committee, have launched the BIAZA Animal Welfare Toolkit. This is a tool that BIAZA members are able to download for free from the Member's Husbandry Resources page on the BIAZA member's area of the website.

 This free, comprehensive guide to zoo animal welfare will assist BIAZA members in achieving the highest possible welfare standards. The Welfare Toolkit contains:

• A working definition of animal welfare (according to the most recent scientific research), so that we can all achieve a consistent, modern approach.
• An overview of animal welfare assessment frameworks: the Five Freedoms, Five Needs and Five Domains.
• A detailed explanation of animal welfare auditing, specific to zoological settings.
• Two customisable animal welfare audit templates and guidance. Members can begin auditing welfare quickly and easily, at a scale and level of intensity to suit them.
