Role Description:        Small Mammal Subgroup Member

Context:          This is a voluntary post for which you must have institutional support and you must be employed at a full BIAZA member zoo or aquarium. The post is within the Small Mammal Subgroup (SMSG) which is part of the British & Irish Association of Zoos & Aquariums (BIAZA) Species Advisory Committee (SAC).  As a SMSG member you will report to the SMSG Chair.

Role Summary:           The purpose of this role is to support the SMSG in driving forward development and awareness of best practice in small mammal husbandry, research, conservation and education and engagement opportunities.

Aims and Responsibilities:

  • To produce ideas for the future direction & development of the SMSG.
  • To contribute to SMSG activities and discussions, including data collection and compilation, identifying and initiating research, sharing information, producing care sheets and other husbandry documents.
  • To attend and participate in SMSG meetings wherever possible (typically 3-4 meetings per year, usually online).
  • To aim to attend and participate in the annual MWG 2-day conference once per year.
  • To help identify candidates for the annual conservation grant.
  • To participate in the organization of any relevant SMSG workshops, and attend in person wherever possible.
  • To facilitate and encourage cooperation and collaboration with other BIAZA committees and Working Groups.
  • To keep up to date with developments in good practice in respect of small mammal care and conservation and share news and updates with the group where relevant.
  • To be a point of contact for the BIAZA Office and take an active role in answering enquiries about small mammal care and welfare whenever necessary.
  • To be a good ambassador for BIAZA and the SMSG.
  • To assist in the aims of the broader BIAZA strategy and the Species Advisory Committee.
