Wild Planet Trust

Wild Planet Trust (WPT) is a leading UK conservation charity that works internationally to achieve our mission of helping halt species decline. We believe that conservation is something that everyone can be involved with and that together we can all make a difference to live more sustainably with nature. Wild Planet Trust, formerly Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust, is a registered education, scientific and conservation charity established in 1955 and based in Devon. We own two zoos in southwest England, plus two local nature reserves and a National Nature Reserve at Slapton.

We believe:

Every species is important

Everything is connected

Every action matters

We bring our mission to life through our START programme, which shapes who we are and what we do:

  • Safe Havens – we identify, improve and create safe havens for threatened species both here in the UK and abroad
  • Togetherness – We work together with community and project partnerships to create deep, long-lasting change
  • Action – We take action to protect and establish sustainable habitats
  • Research – We conduct research to advance animal welfare and conservation science
  • Talk – We talk to people about the vital nature of our work and show them how they can make real, achievable change in their own lives and communities.

With the departure of several long serving Trustees, we are looking to recruit new Trustees to support WPT as we carry on our vital work.

ROLE OF TRUSTEES

We have a Board of 12 Trustees who work closely with the leadership team. The Board is responsible for ensuring that WPT has a clear strategy and that our work and goals are aligned with our vision.  They also support and challenge the leadership team to enable WPT to grow and thrive. The Board operates as a collective group. The skill sets of our Trustees include marketing, HR, finance, biological sciences, media, project management, legal, academic, local government, and business leadership. Whilst specialist knowledge in zoos and conservation is always appreciated, we welcome a range of skills and, above all, a genuine enthusiasm and commitment to the aims of the Trust. At the current time, we would be particularly interested in candidates with significant marketing experience. The time commitment for the role is currently for 8 – 10 half day meetings per year plus occasional subcommittee work. The work is unpaid, but reasonable travel expenses are reimbursed.
