Job Summary:

The National Zoological Society of Wales, more commonly known as the Welsh Mountain Zoo, is seeking an experienced and passionate Horticulture Manager to oversee the planning, development, and maintenance of all Zoo grounds and gardens. This role is responsible for ensuring the Zoo’s landscape enhances the visitor experience, supports animal welfare, and aligns with conservation efforts. The Horticulture Manager will lead a team of 3 to 4 staff members, coordinating daily tasks and long-term projects to maintain a lush, engaging, and sustainable environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Team Leadership & Management: Supervise and mentor a team of 3 to 4 horticulture staff, providing guidance, scheduling, and training to maintain high standards in landscape maintenance.
  • Grounds & Garden Maintenance: Oversee the care and upkeep of all zoo gardens, green spaces, exhibits, and public areas, ensuring plant health, cleanliness, and aesthetic appeal.
  • Plant Selection & Habitat Design: Work collaboratively with animal teams to select appropriate plant species that enhance animal habitats and support natural behaviours.
  • Sustainability & Conservation: Implement eco-friendly practices, including water-efficient irrigation, composting, and rare native plant cultivation, to align with the zoo’s sustainability and conservation goals.
  • Seasonal Planting & Displays: Design and execute seasonal planting, decorative floral displays, and special horticultural features to enhance visitor engagement and experience.
  • Pest & Disease Management: Monitor and address plant health issues using integrated pest management (IPM) practices to ensure a safe environment for both animals and visitors.
  • Budget & Resource Management: Develop and manage the horticulture budget, ensuring efficient use of resources and procurement of necessary supplies and equipment.
  • Collaboration & Public Engagement: Work closely with other zoo departments, including education and events teams, to support conservation programs, special events, and guest experiences.
  • Safety & Compliance: Ensure that all horticulture activities comply with safety regulations, zoo policies, and industry best practices.
  • Tree & Browse Management: Oversee the health, pruning, and maintenance of trees throughout the zoo to ensure safety and aesthetic appeal. Manage browse collection and distribution for animal diets, ensuring a sustainable and appropriate supply of plant material for various species. Ensure regular tree checks and inspections are carried out and are recorded accurately.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • RHS Level 2 Horticulture qualification as a minimum or Bachelor’s Degree in Horticulture, Landscape Management, Environmental Science, or a related field preferred. Equivalent work experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in horticulture, landscape management, or a similar role, preferably in a public garden, zoo, or park setting.
  • Proven leadership experience with the ability to supervise and develop a small team effectively.
  • Strong knowledge of plant species, soil health, irrigation systems, and sustainable landscape practices.
  • Familiarity with native and exotic plant species, particularly those suitable for animal habitats.
  • Experience in pest and disease management, including knowledge of integrated pest management (IPM).
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and perform physical labour, including lifting, digging, and operating landscaping equipment.
  • Competent in operating typical garden machinery and equipment.
  • Strong organisational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • A passion for conservation, sustainability, and enhancing the natural environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a zoo, botanical garden, or similar environment.
  • Certifications in horticulture, arboriculture, or landscape management.
  • Knowledge of zoo-specific landscaping challenges and best practices.

Working Conditions:

  • Full-time position with weekend and bank holiday work as needed.
  • Outdoor work in varying weather conditions, with physical demands including lifting and prolonged standing or walking.
  • Interaction with zoo staff, volunteers, and the public to promote horticultural awareness and conservation.
