Hertfordshire Zoo is seeking a Health & Safety Coordinator to manage and promote a culture of safety across our site. This part-time role (24 hours per week) involves ensuring compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations, supporting emergency response planning, and leading initiatives to reduce risks and improve safety for employees, visitors, and contractors.
Key Responsibilities:
· Develop, implement, and maintain health, safety & environmental policies
· Conduct risk assessments and ensure compliance with UK health & safety standards
· Monitor, audit, and report on safety practices, investigating incidents and accidents
· Lead training initiatives and support emergency response drills
· Oversee Safe Systems of Work, Permit to Work, and contractor safety procedures
· Manage environmental protection initiatives, including waste disposal and emissions monitoring
· Conduct hands-on inspections and manage third-party testing of systems and assets
· Support building & maintenance tasks related to health, safety, and environmental concerns
Your Skills & Experience:
Essential
· Full UK driving licence
· Relevant, up-to-date qualification in Health & Safety (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH, or equivalent)
· Proven experience in a health & safety role or similar position
· Strong knowledge of health & safety regulations and practices
· Knowledge of Risk Assessments, Safe Systems of Work, accident investigation & PUWER
· Knowledge of building services systems and general maintenance
· Excellent communication & problem-solving skills
· Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, & Outlook, with the ability to learn bespoke systems
Desirable
· Knowledge of the construction & maintenance industry, including CDM 2015
· Understanding of zoonotic disease and animal management-related health & safety
· First Aid trained or willingness to undertake relevant trainin
