Scope of Job:
Supervising the daily operations of our displays team, including the health and safety of animals and people. Managing and developing your team, ensuring high standards of cleanliness, care, and innovation are met. Collaborating on animal acquisitions, transport, and quarantines, while meeting SEA LIFE Brighton standards. Be a key player in animal husbandry and life support system maintenance. Supporting the Curator in project managing new display developments, modernisation of the site delivering fresh and exciting experiences for our guests. Participating in and driving conservation projects on site. Elevating standards to comply with Zoo license standards (including new revised in 2025) and The British and Irish association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA) requirements.
Key Objectives:
· Work closely with Curator to continue in the modernisation of site.
· To maintain consistently high standards of displays presentation, leading team to continued success.
· High standards of husbandry is key to succeed in this role. You’ll have a minimum of 3 years proven experience in the aquarium industry from varying facilities.
· High knowledge of varying life support systems operation, accepting full responsibility for these areas in the absence of line manager.
· To play an active role in the continual development of the displays on site in line with the displays development plan.
· Drive and Discover conservation activities for the site.
· Be an ambassador for SEA LIFE Brighton, leading from the front promoting the core brand values every day to inspire, coach, and motivate others.
· To ensure the continual coaching, development, and motivation of the displays team along with working towards your own professional goals.
· As part of the site Senior Management Team, ensuring full engagement with the site strategies to guarantee commercial success.
Main Responsibilities:
· Supervise and motivate the displays team to work to a level that is equal to or surpasses the guideline set standards for displays.
· To set the standard of high performance and conduct in the workplace, as an example to the rest of the displays team, leading from the front.
· Ensure there is a safe working environment on site for displays staff throughout the attraction, through supporting in keeping up to date risk assessments and health and safety related documents/signs, ensuring all staff are fully trained in safe working procedures and that correct PPE is available for all staff.
· Ensure prompt and accurate reporting for health and safety incidents on site.
· Ensure all back of house areas are kept presentable to a standard set out by the Displays Curator.
· Work with the Displays Curator & Nutritional lead to plan and supervise the preparation of suitable diets and feeds for all livestock and the development of new diet strategies.
· Ensure consistently high levels of animal health and welfare through effective enrichment implementation alongside the enrichment lead.
· Ensure ongoing routine maintenance of Life Support Systems, crisis management equipment, environmental alarms, and associated critical spares through effective supervision of the displays team.
· Ensure accurate and up to date displays record systems including deliveries, collections, livestock management, feeding, and associated matters are maintained on a daily basis through effective supervision of the displays team.
· Maintain and develop displays, working towards the site Displays Development Plan and Master Plan.
· As a key member of the displays team, alarm callout duties will be mandatory and as such will be a designated key holder. Due to the nature and importance of this role, it is require for employees to reach the site when on callout duty within 30 minutes.
· Whilst caring for animals and working with the public, it is possible that you will be required to work outside your normal contracted hours. In addition, you will be expected to remain flexible with regards to weekly rotas based on the needs of the business and animal requirements.
· Interacting with the public when required to support the on site education and conservation.
· Where able to become trained as part of the displays dive team and be available for diving in roles determined by the needs of the business.
· Act as senior displays manager on site in the absence of Displays Curator.
· Complying with the statutory and company regulations regarding Health and Safety at Work and COSHH development.
· Lead enrichment standards and development throughout the site, working with the Enrichment lead.
· Ensure the site adheres to all Zoo licence and BIAZA regulations, and how they apply to the centre - through direct action and the effective supervision of the displays team, including the transition to the new Zoo Standards.
· Responsible for the ordering of animal feed and consumables within budgetary constraints and Displays Curator approval.
· To undertake objectives set through yearly PDP assessment.
· Attendance of all relevant training courses and workshops as required.

Managers/supervisors are responsible for all aspects of Health, Safety, & Security within their team, in line with the Group Policy (HS001). In particular, they must ensure that risk assessments have been carried out, that safe working procedures are in place for all work activities and that all employees in their teams are aware of the Group Health, Safety, and Security Policy and their obligations under it. They must ensure that safe working practices are monitored, and that risk assessments and procedures are reviewed regularly. Where incidents do occur, they must ensure that they are investigated appropriately and that where necessary, corrective action is taken to ensure that such incidents are not repeated.
