Shaldon Wildlife Trust is inviting applications for a position on its Board of Trustees. We are currently celebrating our 40th anniversary as a charity, so it’s a perfect time to join an established and passionate team.
Shaldon Wildlife Trust is known as the small zoo making a big difference. We operate from the zoo site based in a woodland area in Shaldon, Devon where we care for some of the world’s most endangered species. In addition, we are active participants in overseas conservation projects as well as involved in many ex-situ breeding programmes. Shaldon Wildlife Trust also works closely with other partner zoos and are active members of both the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA) and the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA).
The Trust is a significant member of the local community. We employ 5 staff and have over 40 volunteers. We welcome over 25,000 visitors and have an annual turnover of over £250,000.
As a Trustee you will be jointly responsible for setting and monitoring the Trust’s strategy and ensuring that governance is maintained in line with regulatory guidance and standards. The Trustees work closely with the Director and his team.
The current Board includes Trustees from financial, HR and zoological backgrounds. We are particularly looking for those with financial accounting, marketing or legal experience but also welcome applicants from all backgrounds that are willing to contribute their experience and skills to the furtherment of our mission and vision.
There are normally four Board meetings per year. The meetings are a mix of in person and online. However, we do encourage Trustees to visit the zoo as often as they can.
The successful candidate will have a strong affinity for the vision and mission of the Trust. This position provides an opportunity to have a positive impact on an active conservation organisation. The position is not remunerated.
