Context: This is a voluntary post for which you must have institutional support and your collection must be a BIAZA member. The post is within the Terrestrial Invertebrate Working Group (TIWG) which is part of the British & Irish Association of Zoos & Aquariums (BIAZA) Species Advisory Committee (SAC).  As a TIWG member you will report to the TIWG Chair and the Species Advisory Committee Chair.

Role Summary: The purpose of this role is to support the TIWG in driving forward development and awareness of best practice in invertebrate husbandry, research, conservation and education and engagement opportunities.

The role will oversee the creation of content and resources to support the education and engagement elements of the Terrestrial Invertebrate Working Group (TIWG).

This will include coordinating the development of husbandry guidelines, invertebrate-focused education content and resources as well as creating digital content with our social media coordinator.

This is a great opportunity for anyone with a desire to improve invertebrate welfare and raise awareness of invertebrates within the BIAZA community.

General Responsibilities:     

  • To produce ideas and plans for the future direction & development of the TIWG.
  • To attend and contribute to TIWG meetings wherever possible (typically 3-4 meetings per year, usually online).
  • To contribute to the organization of an annual TIWG conference, and attend in person wherever possible.
  • To keep up to date with developments in good practice in respect of invertebrate care and conservation and share news and updates with the group where relevant.
  • To contribute to TIWG activities and discussions, including data collection and compilation, identifying and initiating research, sharing information, producing care sheets and other husbandry documents.
  • To be a point of contact for the BIAZA Office and take an active role in answering enquiries about invertebrate care and welfare whenever necessary.
  • To be a good ambassador for BIAZA and the TIWG.
  • To assist in the aims of the broader BIAZA strategy and the Species Advisory Committee.

Role Specific Responsibilities:     

  • To coordinate the development of husbandry guidelines, including species-species care sheets and captive management tools.
  • To coordinate the development of resources which promote engagement and education.
  • To support the development and delivery of annual and/or seasonal campaigns, alongside other members of the TIWG.
  • To support the creation of digital content for social media, alongside our social media coordinator.
