Context:          This is a voluntary post for which you must have institutional support and your collection must be a BIAZA member. The post is within the Terrestrial Invertebrate Working Group (TIWG) which is part of the British & Irish Association of Zoos & Aquariums (BIAZA) Species Advisory Committee (SAC).  As a TIWG member you will report to the TIWG Chair and vice chair.

Role Summary: The purpose of this role is to support the TIWG in driving forward development and awareness of best practice in invertebrate husbandry, research, conservation and education and engagement opportunities.

This role is specifically linked to the creation of a new sub group aimed at bringing the community of butterfly house keepers and managers together to help facilitate knowledge exchange, skills development and facilitate the creation of resources such as Project Butterfly house management guide.
The role will oversee the completion and creation of a BIAZA wide collaborative project to bring together knowledge and expertise surrounding butterfly care and husbandry to create a BIAZA document that covers all elements of butterflies.

The role is for a 12-month period only (subject to project completion)

Responsibilities:     

  • To create and establish a subgroup of members from across the community with experience and expertise on butterfly house care and management.
  • Oversee and coordinate the completion of community management guidelines on butterfly care and management.
  • Facilitate sharing of knowledge and skills within the community to advance butterfly care and other butterfly management related topics
  • Explore the potential of creating plant availability lists and other sourcing facilitation.
  • Assist in their promotion and awareness through BIAZA, TIWG Facebook and BIAZA conferences.
  • To contribute to TIWG activities and discussions, including data collection and compilation, identifying and initiating research, sharing information, producing care sheets and other husbandry documents.
