Location: Onsite at The Big Cat Sanctuary, Smarden, TN27 8PU
Type: Part-Time; 3 days per week, 08.00-17.00
The Big Cat Sanctuary is seeking a practical and proactive Health & Safety Coordinator to support safe working practices across the site. This hands-on role involves working closely with teams to develop sensible, effective ways of working, ensuring tasks are carried out safely and efficiently. You will review risks, improve safety practices, support managers in embedding safety into daily operations, and ensure legal compliance while promoting a positive safety culture for staff, volunteers, visitors, and contractors.
Key responsibilities:
- Develop practical, safe methods for operational tasks
- Conduct risk assessments, review Safe Systems of Work, and provide guidance to staff
- Carry out site inspections, identify risks, investigate incidents, and implement improvements
- Support training, emergency planning, contractor safety, and Permit to Work systems
- Assist with environmental initiatives and coordinate equipment inspections
Requirements (Essential):
- NEBOSH, IOSH, or equivalent qualification
- Health & Safety experience in operational/practical settings
- Strong knowledge of UK H&S legislation and risk management
- Practical, solutions-focused approach; confident working hands-on with teams
- Excellent communication, organisation, and relationship-building skills
- Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle
- In line with the requirements of the Asylum & Immigration Act 1996, all applicants must be eligible to live and work in the UK or must obtain permits before application
Requirements (Desirable):
- Knowledge of construction/maintenance (CDM 2015), animal-related H&S, First Aid
