The Role
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Animal Keeper to join our team. This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for overseeing daily animal care, supervising staff, and ensuring excellent welfare standards and progression across the collection.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise a team of animal keepers as part of the senior animal team.
- Ensure high standards of animal welfare, husbandry, and enrichment.
- Oversee feeding, cleaning, and habitat maintenance routines
- Monitor animal health and liaise with veterinary staff as required.
- Maintain accurate records (diet sheets, medical logs, breeding records)
- Assist with training and development of staff and work experience placements.
- Contribute to conservation, breeding, and research programmes.
- Ensure compliance with health & safety and licensing regulations.
- Engage with visitors through talks, demonstrations, or educational activities
Essential requirements
- At least 5 years experince working in a zoological facility.
- Experience with record-keeping systems (e.g. ZIMS)
- Previous supervisory or senior keeper experience.
- Relevant qualification (e.g. Animal Management, Zoology, or equivalent)
- Strong knowledge of animal welfare standards and husbandry practices
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Excellent communication and leadership skills
- Physically fit and capable of manual work
- Flexible approach to working hours, including weekends and holidays
- Full UK driving license.
Desirable Skills
- Gun license.
- First aid certification (human and/or animal)
- Tractor licence.
- Strimmer/ chainsaw ticket.
