Experienced Animal Keeper - Hoofstock Section

Salary up to £29,213.00 Per Annum DOE, Plus Desirable Benefits

Howletts Wild Animal Park is a world class wildlife park and home to a collection of rare and endangered Hoofstock, including Black Rhino, Cape Buffalo and Bongo Antelope – all of which we have reintroduction projects for. Other species on the section include Red River Hog, Giant Anteater, Asian Deer and Capybara.

As an Animal Keeper, you will undertake all duties on the section from general husbandry including cleaning and feeding - ensuring the correct diets are prepared and distributed, as well as enclosure maintenance and record keeping. You will contribute to the enrichment of the specifies on section, as well as observing the behaviour, health, and security of the animals at all times. When necessary, you will assist with the preparation, distribution, and administration of medication, as well as assisting with the movement and transport of animals.

Who we are looking for:

The ideal candidate will have previous experience working with ungulates in a mainstream zoological collection. You will need to be confident around all types of Hoofstock with a hands-on approach to the restraint and handling of animals where necessary. You will have an awareness of current conservation issues and a genuine passion for animal welfare. This is a physically demanding job, and duties will include heavy lifting, as well as enclosure maintenance and browse cutting. You will be a good communicator with the ability to impart knowledge to the section. Knowledge of health and safety is essential. You must hold a full valid driving licence, and experience of driving agricultural vehicle is an advantage.

Contract details:

This is a full time, permanent position. Working times are 40 hours per week, five days out of seven, with a 1-hour unpaid lunch break 08:00 - 17:00. This can include weekends and bank holidays. The successful candidate will have a genuinely flexible approach to working hours. A reliable mode of transport is recommended due to our remote location. All applicants must have right to work in the UK.
