Hamerton Zoo Park is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Education & Engagement Officer to join our Education Department on a permanent basis. This is an exciting opportunity to inspire visitors of all ages, promote conservation, and help deliver engaging educational experiences that connect people with the natural world.

About the Role

As our Education & Engagement Officer, you will be responsible for delivering and developing educational programming across the zoo, including school visits, animal encounter sessions, photography experiences, public talks, and community engagement initiatives. You will play a key role in ensuring our educational offering remains innovative, engaging, and aligned with current curricula and conservation messaging.

You will be a confident communicator with a passion for wildlife, conservation, and public engagement. Your ability to inspire visitors, build external partnerships, and manage multiple projects will contribute directly to Hamerton Zoo Park's mission of promoting respect, appreciation, and understanding of animals and the natural environment.

Hours: Annualised contract averaging 39 hours per week. Weekend, bank holiday, and school holiday working will be required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver school sessions, talks, photography days, corporate events and outreach activities.
  • Develop educational materials and internal event marketing materials.
  • Promote welfare‑positive, accurate messaging across the zoo.
  • Supervise education volunteers.
  • Collaborate with keepers on animal‑related content to maintain accurate collection knowledge.
  • Data collection and analysis of educational output
  • Consistently comply with Safeguarding standards
  • Produce documentation to comply with current legal standards, Zoo Licence and BIAZA accreditation
  • Act as a professional representative of the organisation when engaging with stakeholders, partners, and the public
  • Outreach Coordination
  • Social Media Management and Delivery (education, corporate content and live-stream hosting)

Reports to: Business Manager

Line manages: Education Volunteers

  • Full and maintained understanding of the park’s animal collection.

  • An interest in wildlife conservation and environmental education
  • The ability to work independently as well as part of a team

Essential Requirements

  • Experience delivering educational activities, presentations or public engagement programmes
  • Experience working with children and young people
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Ability to work weekends, bank holidays and school holiday periods
